19th Amendment

The 19th Amendment, guaranteeing a woman’s right to vote, became part of the US constitution on this day in 1920.

It was ratified by 36 states after the 1918 mid-term elections purged many of the anti-suffrage members of Congress.

Amendment XIX: The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
