legislation to provide copyright protection for fashion design

The bill extending copyright protection to clothing designs has been introduced in every congress since 2006 (109th Congress). We hope it never passes.

Not only does congress have more important things to be focusing on, but if this ever passes it will be used by corporate apparel companies as a cudgel against independent designers.

I’m confused. What’s the difference between trademarking and copyrighting? I have a line of t-shirts, but I don’t know whether to apply for a trademark or register a copyright to protect them. If we apply for a trademark, will that protect all the designs on the t-shirts against knock-offs?
