The Coveted

UPDATED: This matter has been resolved.

From Heraty Law client Jennine Jacob of The Coveted:

Last Friday, I was diligently working on IFB Evolving Influence when I started noticing tweets about the launch of a highly anticipated new blog called The Coveted. Honestly, it felt like a trip to the Twilight Zone, because The Coveted has been here for almost four years. When I clicked on the link, it was to a post on Refinery29, and what’s more, The Coveted wasn’t The Coveted at all.

Privately, I was devastated. Angry. Disheartened. Deflated. The only thing that kept me from losing it was the outcry from my fellow bloggers. Without my readers, the blogging community and my most of all my friends, I honestly don’t know what would have happened. I wasn’t sure what to say, except “I’m disheartened about this. But I gotta keep focusing on the work I’m doing.

I was about to let it go, until Monday when I got an email in my mailbox with “Welcome to The Coveted” in the subject line. Not only did they know of my blog, they subscribed me to their mailing list without my permission. With the outpour of emails I received asking if this was my project, and the anger from the bloggers, I was left with but one choice.

Thanks to a recommendation, I went to Quinn Heraty who specializes in trademark law. Ms. Heraty and I decided the first course of action was to send thecoveted.com a Cease and Desist letter so we could find solution amicably.

To our letter offering to find a amicable solution, click here for their response: (links removed).

Basically, they responded by saying if I don’t stop taking about this, they will sue me.

I want to say thank you to everyone who supported me behind the scenes. You know who you are. Also, thanks to everyone who posted about the whole debacle. Here is a list of the posts I am aware of, if one is missed, or if you come write a new one, do let me know and I’ll add you to this list.

ego trip presents White Dog

posted on January 11th, 2011

Heraty Law client ego trip (a creative collective specializing in multi-media projects that deal with satire, race, and hip-hop) presents White Dog to kick off its new quarterly series “I See White People”.

White Dog by Romain Gary

The screenplay for White Dog was adapted from the novel “White Dog” (1970) by French writer Romain Gary, which was based on the real-life events surrounding the adoption of a “white dog” in Alabama with his then-wife, American actress Jean Seberg (Breathless) in the late 60s.

The phenomenon of “white dogs” – dogs trained by racist owners to attack black people – was something White Dog director Samuel Fuller had been aware of while covering the Ku Klux Klan as a journalist in the 1930′s.  Over the years several directors were slated to helm the picture before Paramount Pictures honed in on Fuller (The Steel Helmet, Pick-Up on South Street) who had previous experience with “social message” films and was no stranger to controversy.

At 7:30pm on Friday, January 21, 2011, White Dog will be presented by the ego trip collective, which will also lead a post-screening panel discussion at  9:00pm. On Saturday (Jan 22nd) and Sunday (Jan 23rd) at 7:30pm White Dog will be screened on its own.

All screenings are at the Maysles Cinema, 343 Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Blvd (b/w 127th & 128th), New York, NY 10027.
Subway: Take the 2/3, 4/5/6, A/B/C/D trains to 125th Street.
Screenings are suggested donation of $10.
Advance tickets can be purchased at the theater or for $10 at Brown Paper Tickets.

ego trip‘s “I See White People” is a quarterly series that examines the role white racism, privilege, and cultural attitudes play in shaping the perspectives that dominate American documentary and fiction film.
