A few preliminary recommendations to get you started:
We strongly recommend reading "All You Need to Know about the Music Business (updated Nov 2006)", which is written for a more general audience, and then "This Business of Music", which is a more technical book written for people who are already familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the music business.
We also recommend "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide", which is an excellent survey of topics associated with developing, producing, and distributing independent films.
Since we're on the subject of surviving, Mary Gehlhar's "The Fashion Designer Survival Guide: An Insider's Look at Starting and Running Your Own Fashion Business" is a must-read for anyone contemplating a career associated with the fashion industry.
